Lillian Stephen

LCQKS is a design studio based in St. Louis, Missouri run by Lillian Stephen. Lillian was born and raised in St. Louis, and after graduating with her BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2017, returned to the region to launch her creative practice. LCQKS is headquartered in what was once a delicatessen - she has since transformed the space into a screen printing and design studio. LCQKS focuses on creating high-quality, durable, hand-made goods designed to be used day in and day out. Lillian is also responsible for the unique pattern designs from which her goods are created - they draw on a deep understanding and appreciation for design history as well as her love for play. Much like a child would build with blocks, Lillian’s designs begin with a grid structure, but are anything but “in the box”.

Class Description

“Surface Design Basics”

Ever wonder how to make planning pattern repeats easier? Lillian Stephen creates surface patterns for 2D and 3D objects, and will introduce students to a quick but effective method to (literally) break down a pattern, check it against itself, and create a repeat that ensures the pattern can be applied to many different surfaces. Students will learn about her process, then dive in and create their own pattern with markers, scissors and tape. This process can help in planning production in a digital environment as well as an analogue one.
